The History of Design seeks to situate and understand the design of space, products, manufacturing techniques, architecture, graphics, fashion, objects, structures and systems within their social, political, and economic contexts. The discipline argues that we can achieve a fuller understanding of history through objects which is inaccessible purely through manuscripts, letters, diaries, and publications.

While there are subjects typical of the Design Historian— such as the history of the decorative arts, crafts, trade fairs, design education, and the consumption of design—the discipline prides itself on its interdisciplinarity, and forges its identity on the amalgamation of anthropology, sociology, political, social and intellectual history, material culture studies, art history, business history, science and technology studies and economic history, to name a few.  Unmaking Things seeks to provide a creative space to experiment with various approaches to the material culture of the past.
